Amtrak Train Derailed

Tuesday night, at approximately 9:30 PM EDT, an Amtrak train traveling from Washington, DC to New York City rounded a bend in the tracks near Philadelphia when, suddenly, the passengers felt the railroad cars coming to a sudden stop, then all seven of the cars went off the tracks, with some of them ending up on their sides.

There were 243 people on board when the accident occurred. Six have been confirmed dead, and over 100 people were taken to the hospital, eight in critical condition. Passengers reported that items such as laptops and luggage flew all over the inside of the cars, and people were also thrown about. Those that weren’t injured helped others get off the train, some escaping through the broken windows.

At this point, Cornelsen can find no cause for the accident. NTSB officials and other examiners will be on the scene to try and figure out what happened and why. After the investigation is complete, the damaged train cars will be removed. There’s no timetable on when the tracks will be usable again.
