City of Chicago Surprised by Draft Move

The City of Chicago is often considered one of the best fan bases in the world. Even during long periods of down years, fans continue to support the teams. After a very poor 2016 season, many Bears fans were excited about the 2017 NFL draft as it provided the Bears with a lot of opportunity to fill in holes on both sides of the ball.

The morning after the first day of the 2017 NFL Draft, many Bears fans and citizens of Chicago have woken up very surprised by the move that the Bears made with their first round pick. Many different news articles are heavily criticizing the Bears for trading up from the number 3 overall pick to number 2 to select quarterback Mitch Trubisky (http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/gallery/nfl-draft-chicago-bears-mitchell-trubisky-skip-bayless-shannon-sharpe-042817).

While some teams were rumored to be interested in taking the quarterback, the Bears appear to have overpaid drastically for the move. The Bears ended up trading away the number 3 overall pick, their third and fourth rounds picks in 2017, and their 2018 third round pick to the 49ers. The 49ers ended up taking Solomon Thomas with the third overall pick and drafted Reuben Foster late in the first round by using the Bears picks to trade back up. Most critics also agree that the 49ers had a very successful first day at the draft.

While the Bears have needed a quarterback for a long time, the move is still surprising. The Bears have a lot of spots that need to be filled and could have used the extra picks to add depth to the roster. Furthermore, they just signed Mike Glennon to a expensive contract for the next two to three years and could have easily waited another year to pick a top QB. At this point, it remains to be seen how successful the move will be.
