Squaw Valley CEO Andy Wirth says the Plan to connect Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows was Dreamed Up Decades Ago

The merger of Squaw Valley and Alpine meadows made a whole lot of fuss in the ski resort industry. Some say it was just a matter of time before the merge happened considering how adjacent the two iconic ski resorts are. You can literally see one mountain from the top of the other. Squaw Valley owners purchased its neighbor Alpine Meadows in 2011. Turning what was once two competing companies into one juggernaut of a ski resort.

Although the two resorts have merged, they’re still not fully unified. Skiers have to drive from one parking lot to the other in order to ski each mountain. A problem Squaw Valley Ski Holdings is well aware of. In an effort to solve the problem, the company has announced plans to build a gondola with the aspiration of connecting the two ski resorts.

The gondola would operate in three parts that include: starting at the bottom of Squaw Valley, up and over the ridge between the two mountains, and down to the bottom of Alpine Meadows.

Squaw Valley CEO Andy Wirth and Troy Caldwell, the owner of the land between the two resorts, reached an agreement they’re both happy with. Connecting the two ski areas would be impossible without Caldwell’s cooperation.

Squaw Valley does still face some resistance from the U.S. Forest Service and Placer County. Squaw Valley is also in the act of expanding their base village. A plan that has garnered much controversy and protest. The company is asking the public to support the building of the gondola on their website. Hoping the public support will help persuade the U.S. Forest Service and Placer County to give them the go ahead to start work on the proposed gondola.

In an interview with Powder, Squaw Valley CEO Andy Wirth explained that the plan to connect the two mountains originated from Squaw Valley founder Wayne Poulsen. Poulsen envisioned the two ski resorts being connected decades ago.

San Francisco is Getting a Tony Bennett Statue

San Francisco is about to get a new statue, one in the image of singer Tony Bennett. The statue is currently being made by sculptor Bruce Wolfe. Bennett, who sings the song ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco’ is a bit of an icon in the city. Wolfe captured him for the statue in person. Bennett traveled to Wolfe’s studio to pose for the sculpture. A sitting that was only supposed to happen one day, he actually came for several days in a row to make it happen, wearing the same suit each day in order to keep the image uniform.

Wolfe says that he needed the three days in order to get the statue just right, something they were both interested in happening. No one wants to be commemorated in statue form forever with something that isn’t perfect, right?

The statue is San Francisco’s birthday gift to the singer. He turns 90 on Friday, August 19th. As a gift, the city will be unveiling the statue on the lawn at the Fairmont Hotel. The Fairmont is located in San Francisco’s Nob Hill neighborhood. It was at that hotel that Bennett made his San Francisco debut, a performance that happened in 1954. The unveiling will happen at noon, early enough to ensure that Bennett can make it to his next big engagement: the SF Giants game.

A base to base gondola has finally been announced in order to connect Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows into one giant skiing resort where visitors don’t even need to take off their gear to get a whole new fresh place to hit the slopes.

According to TohoeTopia, Andy Wirth, the CEO of Squaw Valley Ski, has been dreaming about this happening since at least 2011 but one problem always presented itself: a 460 section of land called White Wolf.

White Wolf is owned by Troy Caldwell and a deal had to be made that left both parties happy before the construction could begin. In the end a deal was made which would have the gondola created in three parts while completely avoiding the wildlife reserve — thus even keeping the local wildlife happy.

Andy Wirth has been getting more and more active in the Lake Tahoe region over the past couple of years and his work is starting to really make an impact on the people in the area. Wirth is serving as a chairman on the Reno Airport Authority Board while also being active with his own philanthropic ventures.

Street Medicine Program For The Homeless Starts Up In NYC

In New York, a medical team ventures out on the streets to treat the homeless. The street medicine program is sponsored by the Center for Urban Community Services. Homelessness requires some severe living and hardship. Fear of authority, shame, and mistrust of the system create a downward circle that gets smaller every day.

To counteract these negative effects, two nurses make contact with the homeless, reports the Huffington Post. Each nurse is partnered with a social worker who has been doing street outreach. The nurses do assessments, referrals, and treatment. Housing and psychiatric care are what the social workers have to offer.

The team approach works better than when the social workers are alone on the street. 200 homeless a year can be reached with this technique. This program is based on Boston Health Care for the Homeless, a successful homeless outreach and follow-up program. They have been in operation since 1985. Their common sense approach states that if they will not come to us, we will go to them.

The more serious health problems of the homeless include foot problems, open sores, diabetes, and high blood pressure. All of these conditions are exacerbated by poor health. There is limited health care that can be done on the street. Blood work cannot be done because the temperature cannot be controlled. This medical unit is on foot after all. Long-term care must be set up with a clinic or hospital.

Some of the homeless are in denial about their medical issues. Others have had a negative experience when dealing with a clinic or hospital. The lines of communication are opened by the street interaction with a medical professional. 60,000 homeless people live in shelters in New York. Another 2800 homeless people are estimated to be out on the street.
