Potential Kaepernick Trade

Ian Rapoport, of the NFL Network, reported Wednesday that Colin Kaepernick will choose not to renew his contract as quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. As Mediaite.com claims, other potential locations for Kaepernick could be Chicago or the New York Jets, as these teams are in desperate need of a veteran quarterback as well.

Despite having performed well in his first two seasons at San Francisco, Kaepernick’s record in the 2016-2017 season was 1-10. On his way to a less than stellar record, Kaepernick recorded 16 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, better than his previous season as the starting quarterback for the 49ers.

In fact, it was the dismal 2015-2016 season which led to Kaepernick being replaced by the backup, Blaine Gabbert, for the first five games this fall. Following a tough string of losses by the 49ers to start the season, Kaepernick was once again picked to lead the squad for the remainder of the schedule. One thing that Kaepernick has going for him in a potential deal with a new team is his recent numbers, though his record does not reflect the improvement he has seen this past year.

Another obvious upside to the free agency of Kaepernick is a rather weak lineup of quarterbacks in the upcoming NFL draft. Despite new competition, the Chicago Tribune was reporting Wednesday that the Bears could be interested in looking at Ashlon Jeffrey as a replacement quarterback, another free agent prospect to be announced within the next couple of weeks.

Rumors in Denver regarding an interest in Tony Romo also makes the quarterback market tough for Kaepernick to enter for the upcoming season. The 49ers may have to wait until March 9th, when negotiations begin, to find out where Kaepernick intends to make his home this year.
