Jobs For Homeless In New Mexico

It sounds like a great idea to give people asking for money a chance to make an honest living, and many of the homeless people who were given these opportunities were happy to jump at the chance to be a valued part of their community. It appears that they had lived their lives for so long in a state of ruin that they were unsure if they could ever actually be employed again. Luckily, town folk and politicians in Albuquerque were able to find a solution, and hopefully other states and other politicians will find inspiration to do the same thing for the homeless populations in their cities.

The following video discusses this new trend going on in New Mexico:

The Mayor in Albuquerque thought of the program and calls it “There’s A Better Way.” It’s a simple concept, but it has surely done amazing things for the town.

San Franciscan Tries to Find New Homes For Abandoned Pianos

San Francisco has a Piano Pound for people who are moving away and aren’t able to take their pianos with them. Silas Moon created Piano Pound as a place for people to donate their old pianos in hopes that they can find a new owner. One of the big complaints is there are people who would love to own a piano but can’t afford them. Some people sell their old pianos, but there are people out there who probably can’t afford those reduced rates.

Silas Moon is offering these pianos for free. Moon is hoping that one day he can move the entire piano collection into a big warehouse where people can just come by and play them for free whenever they want to. There’s no excuse not to play a piano.

Moon believes that the San Francisco Bay area has high rent and a dwindling art scene. He wants to encourage creativity and the love of music for all who live in the area.

Silas Moon was inspired when he began searching the free section of Craig’s List. He was inspired to create Piano Pound. He has given the pianos attractive names and includes a history. Some uprights that he has have named like Tummy, Lex, and Hobart. Sir Hamilton is an upright from Oakland, California with a pleasing tone that would soothe you on a lonely night. These pianos are in very good shape and ready for a new home. Anyone who’s interested in one of Mr. Moon’s pianos can fill out a form on his website by typing in their name, and email. He requires that people put something in the comment area.

Has Vice-Presidential Candidate Tim Kaine Trumped Himself?

Virginia and its capital city, Richmond, are not usually a center stage attraction for national political news; however, the upcoming Presidential Election 2016 provides some interestingly unique observations.

A recent Washington Post article:“Kaine Watch: Obscure Virginia Law Allows A Daring Move” is well worth anyone’s reading time. This August 9th news item contributed by Norman Leahy and Paul Goldman focuses on Tim Kaine and a lesser-known portion of Virginia’s election code. One sentence cited reads that “{n}o person shall have his name printed on the ballot for more than one office at any one election.”

In light of the aforementioned Virginia statute,it should be noted that Tim Kaine’s name will appear on Virginia voting machines as both a Democratic United States Senatorial candidate as well as for Vice-President of the United States.

While Tim Kaine is appearing with Hillary Clinton in cities and towns all across the USA as her vice-presidential running mate, he is still up for reelection to the United States Senate
from Virginia.

This leaves Virginia’s Governor Terry McAuliffe is in a rather precarious position. It appears that Kaine has never officially resigned from his US Senate seat. During a recent interview, Kaine implied that should the Democratic party lose the presidential election, returning to his senatorial duties would not be high on his bucket list. Without official sanction by Kaine, McAuliffe is not in a position to appoint someone in an interim capacity to assume Kaine’s responsibilities on Virginia’s behalf until after election day.

A second crux of this situation regards the “A Daring Move…” portion of the article’s title. In the court of public opinion, the jury is still out relative to whether or not Tim Kaine has knowingly used this obscure code to ensure that Virginia’s 13 electoral votes remain in the Democratic realm.

NYC Tears Down Naked Trump Statue

An artist in Union Square in NYC erected a statue of Donald Trump in the part on Thursday and it was quickly taken down by the New York City Parks Department on the same date just a few hours after it was created.

For a short time it served as a major selfie spot as students and other tourists took photos with the statute while they could.

The New York City Parks Department has a policy that no public erections of statutes can be made on park or city property, though exceptions have been made in the past, notably for the Wall Street Bull that has captured the hearts of many tourists and is now a destination in and of itself. The Trump statue does have a major twist; it is a naked statue of him and the artists indicated that they were trying to be as anatomically correct as possible when they created it.

The statute of Trump was created by an artist collective that is known as Indecline and these statutes were put in a variety of major cities around the country including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. On Youtube the artist collective also showed pictures of themselves creating the statute and what it involved to do so, personally bearing the cost for the project.

Indecline named the project “The Emperor Has No Balls”, which is a reference to the classic story “The Emperor Has No Clothes”. The Donald Trump statute may have a longer life in other cities around the country though and served as a playful statement on the Presidential Election cycle for 2016 which has been rather contentious

Wildfires in California Force Evacuation

California Wildfires Force Thousands to Evacuate to Los Angeles

The west coast, specifically California, continues to be plagued by raging wildfires.

One of the many fires going on right now has proven problematic enough that it has forced the evacuation of some 82,000 people living just east of Los Angeles. The fire broke out on Tuesday in the mountain area and moved fast enough to torch 15,000 acres of land in the process. Making things worse is the fact that several thousand homes are in jeopardy of being consumed or damaged by the fire also.

The blaze, now named the “Bluecut” fire has also resulted in a state of emergency being declared, spreading easily through the dry canyons in the San Bernandino, having destroyed several buildings. The fire has been described by representatives from the U.S. Forest Service as very fast moving.

California Governor Jerry Brown has already requested federal assistance to deal with the blaze that seems to keep growing. In terms of how problematic it has been, the fire has already forced a portion of Interstate 15 to shut down, which is the main road that connects Los Angeles to Las Vegas. In addition to everything else, the fire is now starting to spread in the direction of the Mojave Desert.

An estimated 700 firefighters are working right now to manage the blaze, though the exact cause is still a mystery. Several other communities, such as the Wrightwood ski resort and desert town of Phelan were among those that also had to evacuate the area. One such rancher who was interviewed said the fire made it appear as though it were raining ash.

The New York City You Never See

Well, I do have a mild infatuation with New York. I was briefly in the city for a wedding in Central Park and fell in love with the bustle and business of the city. Beyond that, I am a huge history buff. I like history that you can feel and see, that utter timeless battle scarred quality that places have after they have been through numerous historical events.

I recently read an article about the hidden places in New York and surrounding boroughs. I loved the article for the beautiful pictures and small tidbits of history that the writer of the article brought to the article. The author goes into detail on the specific streets to visit and their historical significance. Here are a few examples:

Minetta Street, Greenwich Village- besides being a beautiful place to take a stroll away from the bustle of city living, Minetta street has a very long history starting in the 17th century, when the area was farmland run by partially freed slaves. In the 9th century workers actually built the city streets over the brook that ran alongside the farmland. Minetta Street has a long, sordid history that is very interesting to read about.

Grace Court Alley, Brooklyn Heights- This historic street is home to some of the oldest architecture in the city. Named in 1847 after Grace Church, Grace Court is all original architecture. Some of the buildings still have the original hay cranes attached, and a beautiful horse carriage is housed at the end of the street.
